Pattern Cutter / Grader

Pattern cutters create patterns that can be made into clothes.

Using the standard size final pattern, pattern graders change the shape of these patterns to allow production of clothes in different sizes.

Although these are two separate jobs, the same person may perform both roles.

Typical work activities include: working with drawings of clothing designs to make basic patterns; adopting different methods of pattern cutting; working with the designer to inspect sample garments before producing final patterns; using a computer and other technology, such as a digitising table.

Pattern cutters/graders mostly work for clothing manufacturers, although there are opportunities to work for specialist cutting/grading firms. There are also opportunities to freelance. The work of a pattern cutter/grader may be incorporated into the role of designer in smaller companies. There are opportunities in the UK and abroad and progression is possible to head pattern cutter/grader or work specialising as a designer.
