Heritage and Museum Management

Cultural Heritage includes Museums, Archaeology and the Built Heritage.

The industry includes 6,000 organisations which range from small volunteer run to large public sector and independent institutions. Cultural heritage organisations are mainly non profit-making permanent organisations, open to the public.

In the UK, many are recognised as amongst the best in the world. Their business ranges from conservation and care of the cultural heritage to learning and community development, often playing a key role in the tourism economy; for example, London museums have 41 million visitors a year. Cultural heritage contributes £1.01B to the UK economy each year.

The cultural heritage industry comprises organisations covering ancient monuments, archaeological sites, art galleries, collections, visitor centres, historic buildings, museums and gardens as well as the interpretation of scientific and natural sites. 50% of people working in cultural heritage have a qualification at degree level.
